परेण समवेतस् तु यः प्रशस्तः स पूज्यते ॥
विशाला बहुला भूमिर् बहुरत्नसमाचिता ॥
दूरं गत्वा विजानाति श्रेयो वृष्णिकुलोद्वह ॥

"How can one who knows the greatness of others praise himself? He who, being set alongside another, is [thereby] praised, is [truly] honored. Vast and abundant is the earth, strewn with many treasures; going far, a man comes to know what is best, o support of the Vrishni race."

Here the king rejects self-praise: worth is recognized by others, not proclaimed by oneself. It is significant that Yudhishthira remembers the vastness of the world and its many worthy men: humility is born of remembering that one is not the only one. Thus the scripture reveals modesty as the fruit of a wide view; and further the king inclines toward peace.
