वैशंपायन उवाच
ततः कुमारविषये श्रेणिमन्तम् अथाजयत् ॥
कोसलाधिपतिं चैव बृहद्बलम् अरिंदमः ॥
अयोध्यायां तु धर्मज्ञं दीर्घप्रज्ञं महाबलम् ॥
अजयत् पाण्डवश्रेष्ठो नातितीव्रेण कर्मणा ॥
ततो गोपालकच्छं च सोत्तमान् अपि चोत्तरान् ॥
मल्लानाम् अधिपं चैव पार्थिवं व्यजयत् प्रभुः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tataḥ kumāraviṣaye śreṇimantam athājayat ||
kosalādhipatiṃ caiva bṛhadbalam ariṃdamaḥ ||
ayodhyāyāṃ tu dharmajñaṃ dīrghaprajñaṃ mahābalam ||
ajayat pāṇḍavaśreṣṭho nātitīvreṇa karmaṇā ||
tato gopālakacchaṃ ca sottamān api cottarān ||
mallānām adhipaṃ caiva pārthivaṃ vyajayat prabhuḥ ||
Then in the region of Kumara, the tamer of foes conquered Shrenimat and Brihadbala, the lord of Kosala. In Ayodhya, the best of the Pandavas conquered, with not too harsh a force, a knower of dharma — a far-sighted, mighty king. Then the lord conquered Gopalakaccha, the northerners together with the Uttamas, and the lord of the Mallas.

In Ayodhya — the city of Rama, a seat of righteousness — Bhima conquers the 'knower of dharma' (dharmajña) 'with not too harsh a force.' The resonance is telling: the righteous are met with righteousness, without excess of violence. Force tempers itself when it meets worth; the nobler the opponent, the more restrained the victor. The verse teaches that the measure of force applied is a mirror of respect: where there is something to honor, the blow falls lightly; and an order established by a hand that honors the dharma of the conquered stands firmer than an order built on terror.
