पार्थिवैर् बहुभिः कीर्णम् उपस्थानं दिदृक्षुभिः ॥
सर्वरत्नान्य् उपादाय पार्थिवा वै जनेश्वर ॥

वैश्या इव महीपाला द्विजातिपरिवेषकाः ॥
न सा श्रीर् देवराजस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य वा ॥
गुह्यकाधिपतेर् वापि या श्री राजन् युधिष्ठिरे ॥
तां दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुपुत्रस्य श्रियं परमिकाम् अहम् ॥
शान्तिं न परिगच्छामि दह्यमानेन चेतसा ॥

na sā śrīr devarājasya yamasya varuṇasya vā ||
guhyakādhipater vāpi yā śrī rājan yudhiṣṭhire ||
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍuputrasya śriyaṃ paramikām aham ||
śāntiṃ na parigacchāmi dahyamānena cetasā ||
"The reception hall was full of many kings who had come to see; and the kings, taking all their jewels, at the sacrifice of that wise son of Pandu, O great king, were like vaishyas serving the twice-born. There is no such fortune belonging to the king of gods [Indra], nor to Yama, nor to Varuna, nor to the lord of the guhyakas [Kubera], as the fortune, O king, that belongs to Yudhishthira. Having seen that supreme fortune of the son of Pandu, I attain no peace, my heart consumed by fire."

Duryodhana exalts Yudhishthira's fortune above Indra, Yama, Varuna, and Kubera — and by that very admission burns himself. It is telling that envy can rightly appraise another's greatness yet cannot rejoice in it: it sees clearly and suffers acutely. The verse teaches that the envious man's torment is proportional to the very height he himself grants his rival — the truer his praise, the deeper his wound. This very exaltation of the Pandavas to the level of the world's guardians ought to inspire awe; but a "burning heart" turns admiration into torture. To recognize righteous greatness and not bow before it — this is the hell the envious man carries in his chest.
