Thus addressed by Shakuni, king Duryodhana at once said this word to Dhritarashtra: "This one, the dice-expert, O king, is ready to seize fortune from the son of Pandu by gambling; grant your leave for it."

Duryodhana hastens — "without delay" — to seek his father's permission for deceit. It is telling that even an unrighteous deed seeks to sanctify itself with an elder's authority: the son does not dare to gamble without his father's word, as if permission would purify the scheme. The verse teaches that the sinner often craves sanction from above — not to have his deed tested, but to shield it. Yet the permission of the unrighteous does not make wrong right: the weak father's consent will not lift the guilt of a treacherous game. And Duryodhana's haste betrays a fear of delay — lest sober counsel cool the plan. Evil hurries while it is inflamed, for postponement and reflection are the enemies of iniquity.
