धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
क्षत्तः पुत्रेषु पुत्रैर् मे कलहो न भविष्यति ॥
दिवि देवाः प्रसादं नः करिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥
अशुभं वा शुभं वापि हितं वा यदि वाहितम् ॥
प्रवर्ततां सुहृद्द्यूतं दिष्टम् एतन् न संशयः ॥
मयि संनिहिते चैव भीष्मे च भरतर्षभे ॥
अनयो दैवविहितो न कथं चिद् भविष्यति ॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
kṣattaḥ putreṣu putrair me kalaho na bhaviṣyati ||
divi devāḥ prasādaṃ naḥ kariṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ ||
aśubhaṃ vā śubhaṃ vāpi hitaṃ vā yadi vāhitam ||
pravartatāṃ suhṛddyūtaṃ diṣṭam etan na saṃśayaḥ ||
mayi saṃnihite caiva bhīṣme ca bharatarṣabhe ||
anayo daivavihito na kathaṃ cid bhaviṣyati ||
"O Kshattri, there will be no quarrel between my sons [and the sons of Pandu]; the gods in heaven, no doubt, will show us favor. Whether inauspicious or auspicious, beneficial or harmful — let the friendly game proceed; this is fate, no doubt. With me and with Bhishma, bull of the Bharatas, present, no calamity, even one ordained by fate, will ever occur."

Dhritarashtra excuses himself with talk of "fate" and empty reassurance: the gods, he says, will show mercy, no calamity will come. Tellingly, his own words contradict each other: first "this is fate" (meaning it cannot be averted), then "it will not happen while I am present" (meaning it can be) — the confusion of a mind seeking to justify what it has already decided. The verse teaches that invoking destiny in the mouth of one who abets evil is self-deception: fate is made a cover for what one does oneself. And the hope that "no harm will come while I am present" is the presumption of a blind man: he imagines that his own presence and Bhishma's can halt the avalanche he himself is releasing. One who opens the gates of ruin and then swears to hold them shut deceives no one more than himself; for he who has let in the calamity will not be the one to turn it back.
