"That teaching which the divine sage, teacher of Vasava, the blessed Brihaspati of exalted wisdom, proclaimed to the wise king of the gods — all of that, together with its secret, Vidura knows, the great seer; and in his word I abide always, my son. Wise Vidura is regarded as the best of the Kurus, as is Uddhava of great wisdom, honored among the Vrishnis, O king. Enough of gambling, son; in gambling discord is seen, in discord the ruin of the kingdom; abandon that, then, son."

The king himself utters the prophetic formula: 'in gambling, discord; in discord, the ruin of the kingdom.' It is remarkable how clearly he sees the chain of causes — and how powerless he is before it. The verse teaches that foreseeing a disaster does not mean averting it: sight alone is not enough, firmness of will is needed. And the praise of Vidura and Uddhava as the greatest of sages only underscores the tragedy: the physician is at hand, the diagnosis given, the outcome foretold — yet the patient will not take the medicine. Whoever, knowing the root of ruin, does not tear it out because of love for his own, becomes an accomplice in his own catastrophe; clarity of mind without courage of heart is a lamp in the hand of a blind man.
