तत्र मां प्राहसत् कृष्णः पार्थेन सह सस्वनम् ॥

ददुर् वासांसि मे ऽन्यानि तच् च दुःखतरं मम ॥
प्रलम्भं च शृणुष्वान्यं गदतो मे नराधिप ॥
अद्वारेण विनिर्गच्छन् द्वारसंस्थानरूपिणा ॥
अभिहत्य शिलां भूयो ललाटेनास्मि विक्षतः ॥
tatra māṃ prāhasat kṛṣṇaḥ pārthena saha sasvanam ||
draupadī ca saha strībhir vyathayantī mano mama ||
klinnavastrasya ca jale kiṃkarā rājacoditāḥ ||
dadur vāsāṃsi me 'nyāni tac ca duḥkhataraṃ mama ||
pralambhaṃ ca śṛṇuṣvānyaṃ gadato me narādhipa ||
advāreṇa vinirgacchan dvārasaṃsthānarūpiṇā ||
abhihatya śilāṃ bhūyo lalāṭenāsmi vikṣataḥ ||
"There Krishna, together with Partha [Arjuna], laughed loudly at me, and Draupadi with the women, tormenting my mind. And when my garments were soaked with water, servants, urged on by the king, gave me other garments; and that was even more painful to me. And hear, O lord of men, another deception, as I tell it: going out through what was not a door but had the appearance of one, —"

Even a kindness — dry garments in place of the soaked ones — Duryodhana experiences as "even more painful": a rival's grace burns him more than mockery does. It is telling that to the envious even goodness itself is an offense: to accept help from the one you envy is, for pride, more unbearable than an insult. The verse teaches that an embittered heart turns even a good deed to poison: it hates being indebted, hates depending on the mercy of the one who has surpassed it. And here lies the depth of the affliction: the envious man finds no peace either in enmity or in the kindness shown to him; everything feeds his torment. For one whose heart is unhealed, even bread from another's hand is bitterer than stone.
