पित्रा मात्रा च पुत्रस्य यद् वै कार्यं परं स्मृतम् ॥

भ्रातृज्येष्ठः स्थितो राज्ये विन्दसे किं न शोभनम् ॥
पृथग्जनैर् अलभ्यं यद् भोजनाच्छादनं परम् ॥
तत् प्राप्तो ऽसि महाबाहो कस्माच् छोचसि पुत्रक ॥
pitrā mātrā ca putrasya yad vai kāryaṃ paraṃ smṛtam ||
prāptas tvam asi tat tāta pitṛpaitāmahaṃ padam ||
adhītavān kṛtī śāstre lālitaḥ satataṃ gṛhe ||
bhrātṛjyeṣṭhaḥ sthito rājye vindase kiṃ na śobhanam ||
pṛthagjanair alabhyaṃ yad bhojanācchādanaṃ param ||
tat prāpto 'si mahābāho kasmāc chocasi putraka ||
"What is regarded by father and mother as the highest gift to a son — that you have attained, dear one: the paternal-ancestral inheritance. Learned, skilled in the shastra, always cherished in the house, eldest among the brothers, established in the kingdom — what excellence do you not possess? The finest food and clothing, unattainable by common people, you have obtained, O mighty-armed one; why then do you grieve, my son?"

The father again lists his son's blessings — in almost the same words as before. This repetition is significant: the exhortation goes in circles, powerless to break through the deafness of envy. The verse teaches that an argument not received by the heart does not grow stronger by repetition: where there is no will to listen, even what is said many times over falls in vain. But the repetition is useful for us, the readers: before our eyes the whole abundance possessed by this unhappy envier is spread out once again — so that the truth may become clearer, that it is not want that torments him, but envy. However many blessings you enumerate to one who cannot rejoice in what he has, he will grieve, for he looks not at what is his but at what belongs to another.
