न च किं चित् तदोचुस् ते ह्रिया सन्तो युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
मनोभिर् एव कल्याणं दध्युस् ते तस्य धीमतः ॥

The silence of the good here differs from before: then they were silent from fear of wrongdoing, now they are mute from shame before the wronged man whom they did not defend. This silence is the verdict of their own conscience, a mute admission of guilt. And yet their hidden well-wishing does not atone for the word left unspoken in the hour of need: a good thought that never became deed and intercession remains powerless. The verse teaches that shame over undone good is the beginning of conscience, but not yet its fulfillment; that good intentions which dared not raise their voice in the hour of injustice stand in judgment over the good themselves; and that silent sympathy, arriving too late to defend, is a bitter monument to a duty left unmet.
