एवम् उक्तः तु कौन्तेय सूतपुत्रः तदा मृधेevam uktaḥ tu kaunteya sūtaputraḥ tadā mṛdhethus addressed, O Kaunteya, the son of the suta then in the battle
प्रद्युम्नम् अब्रवीत् श्लक्ष्णं मधुरं वाक्यम् अञ्जसाpradyumnam abravīt ślakṣṇaṃ madhuraṃ vākyam añjasāsaid to Pradyumna a gentle, sweet and direct word
न मे भयं रौक्मिणेय संग्रामे यच्छतः हयान्na me bhayaṃ raukmiṇeya saṃgrāme yacchataḥ hayānI have no fear, O son of Rukmini, when I hold the reins in battle
युद्धज्ञः च अस्मि वृष्णीनां न अत्र किं चित् अतः अन्यथाyuddhajñaḥ ca asmi vṛṣṇīnāṃ na atra kiṃ cit ataḥ anyathāand I know the martial custom of the Vrishnis; there is nothing else in this
आयुष्मन् उपदेशः तु सारथ्ये वर्ततां स्मृतःāyuṣman upadeśaḥ tu sārathye vartatāṃ smṛtaḥO long-lived one, the instruction for those who serve as charioteers is remembered
सर्वार्थेषु रथी रक्ष्यः त्वं च अपि भृशपीडितःsarvārtheṣu rathī rakṣyaḥ tvaṃ ca api bhṛśapīḍitaḥin all circumstances the warrior on the chariot must be protected, and you were sorely afflicted
त्वं हि शाल्वप्रयुक्तेन पत्रिणा अभिहतः भृशम्tvaṃ hi śālvaprayuktena patriṇā abhihataḥ bhṛśamfor you were struck hard by a feathered arrow loosed by Shalva
कश्मलाभिहतः वीर ततः अहम् अपयातवान्kaśmalābhihataḥ vīra tataḥ aham apayātavānand struck down by faintness, O hero; therefore I withdrew
स त्वं सात्वतमुख्य अद्य लब्धसंज्ञः यदृच्छयाsa tvaṃ sātvatamukhya adya labdhasaṃjñaḥ yadṛcchayānow you, foremost of the Satvatas, having by good fortune regained your senses
पश्य मे हयसंयाने शिक्षां केशवनन्दनpaśya me hayasaṃyāne śikṣāṃ keśavanandanabehold my skill in driving the horses, O joy of Keshava
दारुकेण अहम् उत्पन्नः यथावत् च एव शिक्षितःdārukeṇa aham utpannaḥ yathāvat ca eva śikṣitaḥI was born of Daruka and trained just as I should be
वीतभीः प्रविशामि एतां शाल्वस्य महतीं चमूम्vītabhīḥ praviśāmi etāṃ śālvasya mahatīṃ camūmwithout fear I shall enter this vast army of Shalva
एवम् उक्त्वा ततः वीर हयान् संचोद्य संगरेevam uktvā tataḥ vīra hayān saṃcodya saṃgarehaving said this, the hero then urged on the horses in the battle

The suta does not argue out of pride, nor does he grovel out of fear. He calmly explains his duty and then carries it out at once. Such service rests on competence: loyalty shows itself not in words but in the skill to bring the hero back into the very heart of the battle.
