मण्डलानि विचित्राणि यमकानीतराणि च ॥
सव्यानि च विचित्राणि दक्षिणानि च सर्वशः ॥
प्रतोदेनाहता राजन् रश्मिभिश् च समुद्यताः ॥
उत्पतन्त इवाकाशं विबभुस् ते हयोत्तमाः ॥
ते हस्तलाघवोपेतं विज्ञाय नृप दारुकिम् ॥
दह्यमाना इव तदा पस्पृशुश् चरणैर् महीम् ॥
सो ऽपसव्यां चमूं तस्य शाल्वस्य भरतर्षभ ॥
चकार नातियत्नेन तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
अमृष्यमाणो ऽपसव्यं प्रद्युम्नेन स सौभराट् ॥
यन्तारम् अस्य सहसा त्रिभिर् बाणैः समर्पयत् ॥
दारुकस्य सुतस् तं तु बाणवेगम् अचिन्तयन् ॥
भूय एव महाबाहो प्रययौ हयसंमतः ॥
ततो बाणान् बहुविधान् पुनर् एव स सौभराट् ॥
मुमोच तनये वीरे मम रुक्मिणिनन्दने ॥
तान् अप्राप्ताञ् शितैर् बाणैश् चिच्छेद परवीरहा ॥
रौक्मिणेयः स्मितं कृत्वा दर्शयन् हस्तलाघवम् ॥

dahyamānā iva tadā paspṛśuś caraṇair mahīm ||
so 'pasavyāṃ camūṃ tasya śālvasya bharatarṣabha ||
cakāra nātiyatnena tad adbhutam ivābhavat ||
amṛṣyamāṇo 'pasavyaṃ pradyumnena sa saubharāṭ ||
yantāram asya sahasā tribhir bāṇaiḥ samarpayat ||
dārukasya sutas taṃ tu bāṇavegam acintayan ||
bhūya eva mahābāho prayayau hayasaṃmataḥ ||
tato bāṇān bahuvidhān punar eva sa saubharāṭ ||
mumoca tanaye vīre mama rukmiṇinandane ||
tān aprāptāñ śitair bāṇaiś ciccheda paravīrahā ||
raukmiṇeyaḥ smitaṃ kṛtvā darśayan hastalāghavam ||
'The charioteer drove the horses in circles, in double courses, in turns to the left and to the right. Raised by the reins and urged on by the goad, the best of horses shone as though soaring into the sky. Recognizing the light hand of Daruka's son, they touched the ground with their hooves as though ablaze. Without great effort he circled Shalva's army against the sun, and it was as though a marvel. The king of Saubha could not bear such a circuit and struck the charioteer with three arrows, but Daruka's son paid no heed and drove the horses on again. Shalva loosed a multitude of arrows at my son, but the son of Rukmini, smiling and displaying the lightness of his hand, cut them down with sharp arrows before they reached their mark.'

The charioteer's skill becomes as much a part of victory as the hero's archery. In battle each one carries out his own portion of dharma: one drives the horses, another cuts down the arrows, and this harmony of service proves stronger than Shalva's chaotic fury.
