Among intelligent beings, men are the best. Among men, the twice-born excel. Among the twice-born, those learned in the Vedas excel. Among those learned in the Vedas, those endowed with cultured understanding excel. Among cultured people, practical men excel. And, finally, among practical men, those who know the Supreme Being excel. You know what kind of man the lord of the Kuru race is, and what kind of man Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, is. It was with the knowledge of Dhritarashtra that the Pandavas were deceived by their enemies.

This fragment (5.6.1-5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key themes: the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra, Vidura. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of an envoy, faithfulness to one's promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
