मत्संहननतुल्यानां गोपानाम् अर्बुदं महत् ॥
नारायणा इति ख्याताः सर्वे संग्रामयोधिनः ॥
ते वा युधि दुराधर्षा भवन्त्व् एकस्य सैनिकाः ॥
अयुध्यमानः संग्रामे न्यस्तशस्त्रो ऽहम् एकतः ॥
आभ्याम् अन्यतरं पार्थ यत् ते हृद्यतरं मतम् ॥
तद् वृणीतां भवान् अग्रे प्रवार्यस् त्वं हि धर्मतः ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
एवम् उक्तस् तु कृष्णेन कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥
अयुध्यमानं संग्रामे वरयाम् आस केशवम् ॥
सहस्राणां सहस्रं तु योधानां प्राप्य भारत ॥
कृष्णं चापहृतं ज्ञात्वा संप्राप परमां मुदम् ॥

In view of your having arrived first, and in view of my having seen Arjuna first, I shall without doubt render my help to you both, O Suyodhana. But it is said that the first choice should belong to the younger in age. Therefore Dhananjaya, son of Kunti, has the right of first choice. There is a great host of cowherds, numbering ten crores, rivaling me in strength and known as the Narayanas, and all of them are capable of fighting in the thick of battle. These soldiers, unconquerable in war, will be sent to one of you, while I alone, resolving not to fight on the battlefield and laying down my weapons, shall go to the other. You may, O son of Kunti, choose first between these two, whichever pleases you. For by law you have the right of first choice.
