Some nurture madness, others fall under the power of enemies; some sink into servitude for the sake of others' gain. Yet misfortune itself is more grievous for a man than his very death, for the destruction of prosperity is the cause of both his dharma and his desire. His righteous death is the eternal way of the world, one that no being anywhere ever escapes. A man poor by nature, O Krishna, is not afflicted so much as one who, having attained fair prosperity and grown accustomed to happiness, is then deprived of it. Having fallen, by his own fault, into great misfortune, such a man reproaches the gods, Indra among them, but never himself, not in any way.

This passage develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even as war draws near and seems unavoidable. Key themes: Krishna, dharma. Dharma here comes to light through speech, the choice of envoys, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
