He places great trust in Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, the son of Drona, and Jayadratha, and therefore, O Janardana, he never desires peace. The sons of Dhritarashtra, together with Karna, firmly believe that the Pandavas are unable even to look upon Bhishma, Drona, and the other heroes, let alone contend with them. The foolish Duryodhana, of limited vision, having gathered a vast army, believes, O slayer of Madhu, that his aims are already accomplished. The foolish son of Dhritarashtra has concluded that Karna alone is able to vanquish his enemies.

This fragment (5.92.11-15) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: Krishna, Vidura, dharma. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
