'"As Bhishma, son of Shantanu, and Drona, the mighty chariot-warrior, have said, this is the truth, my child: Krishna and the Pandava are invincible. Take refuge in the mighty-armed Krishna, untiring in his deeds; Keshava, once pleased, would be for the happiness of both sides. Whoever does not stand by the counsel of friends who desire his welfare, who are wise and learned, that man gladdens his enemies. In war, my child, there is no good, no dharma or profit — whence, then, could happiness come? Nor is victory ever permanent; do not set your mind on war. For your father Bhishma and Bahlika, fearing a rift, gave a share to the sons of Pandu, O subduer of enemies."'

Gandhari speaks as a mother and as the bearer of sober dharma: a kingdom cannot be held by will alone if a man has not conquered his own senses. The essence of her speech is not an emotional plea but a political-ethical diagnosis: desire, anger, and greed strip Duryodhana of his helpers, destroy the family, and make war inevitable.
