'"Enough of this daily humiliation, inflicted now for thirteen years; calm it, O greatly wise one, this thing swollen by desire and anger. The son of the charioteer, firm in his wrath, and your brother Duhshasana, who wish your good against the Parthas, are not capable of this. When Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, Bhimasena, Dhananjaya, and Dhrishtadyumna are enraged, surely no people at all would remain. Having fallen under the sway of intolerance, my child, do not seek to destroy the Kurus. For the whole earth is touched by the destruction to come because of you and the Pandavas. And as for what you think, O fool — that Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the rest will fight with all their might — that is not true today."'

Gandhari speaks as a mother and as the bearer of sober dharma: a kingdom cannot be held by will alone if a man has not conquered his own senses. The essence of her speech is not an emotional plea but a political-ethical diagnosis: desire, anger, and greed strip Duryodhana of his helpers, destroy the family, and make war inevitable.
