वैशंपायन उवाच
जनार्दनवचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
भ्रातॄन् उवाच धर्मात्मा समक्षं केशवस्य ह ॥
श्रुतं भवद्भिर् यद्वृत्तं सभायां कुरुसंसदि ॥
केशवस्यापि यद् वाक्यं तत् सर्वम् अवधारितम् ॥
तस्मात् सेनाविभागं मे कुरुध्वं नरसत्तमाः ॥
अक्षौहिण्यस् तु सप्तैताः समेता विजयाय वै ॥
तासां मे पतयः सप्त विख्यातास् तान् निबोधत ॥
द्रुपदश् च विराटश् च धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनौ ॥
सात्यकिश् चेकितानश् च भीमसेनश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
एते सेनाप्रणेतारो वीराः सर्वे तनुत्यजः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
janārdanavacaḥ śrutvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
bhrātṝn uvāca dharmātmā samakṣaṃ keśavasya ha ||
śrutaṃ bhavadbhir yadvṛttaṃ sabhāyāṃ kurusaṃsadi ||
keśavasyāpi yad vākyaṃ tat sarvam avadhāritam ||
tasmāt senāvibhāgaṃ me kurudhvaṃ narasattamāḥ ||
akṣauhiṇyas tu saptaitāḥ sametā vijayāya vai ||
tāsāṃ me patayaḥ sapta vikhyātās tān nibodhata ||
drupadaś ca virāṭaś ca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśikhaṇḍinau ||
sātyakiś cekitānaś ca bhīmasenaś ca vīryavān ||
ete senāpraṇetāro vīrāḥ sarve tanutyajaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: Having heard the words of Janardana, the righteous king Yudhishthira, in the presence of Keshava, addressed his brothers: "You have heard what happened in the assembly of the Kurus, and you have fully understood the words of Keshava. Therefore, best of men, arrange the division of my army. These seven akshauhinis have gathered for victory. Learn the names of their seven renowned commanders: Drupada, Virata, Dhrishtadyumna and Shikhandin, Satyaki, Chekitana, and mighty Bhimasena. All these heroes are leaders of the army, ready to lay down their lives."

In this chapter the peace negotiations finally give way to the organizing of war. The Pandavas choose their military leader not out of pride but through counsel, experience, and trust in Krishna; their advance toward Kurukshetra is then described as orderly, sacrificially prepared, and surrounded by allies. Dharma shows itself here not as a refusal to act but as the right ordering of an inevitable duty.
