एष धाता विधाता च सिद्धिर् अत्र प्रतिष्ठिता ॥
यम् आह कृष्णो दाशार्हः स नः सेनापतिः क्षमः ॥
ब्रवीतु वदतां श्रेष्ठो निशा समतिवर्तते ॥
ततः सेनापतिं कृत्वा कृष्णस्य वशवर्तिनम् ॥
रात्रिशेषे व्यतिक्रान्ते प्रयास्यामो रणाजिरम् ॥
अधिवासितशस्त्राश् च कृतकौतुकमङ्गलाः ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥
अब्रवीत् पुण्डरीकाक्षो धनंजयम् अवेक्ष्य ह ॥
ममाप्य् एते महाराज भवद्भिर् य उदाहृताः ॥
नेतारस् तव सेनायाः शूरा विक्रान्तयोधिनः ॥
सर्व एते समर्था हि तव शत्रून् प्रमर्दितुम् ॥
इन्द्रस्यापि भयं ह्य् एते जनयेयुर् महाहवे ॥
किं पुनर् धार्तराष्ट्राणां लुब्धानां पापचेतसाम् ॥

tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ||
abravīt puṇḍarīkākṣo dhanaṃjayam avekṣya ha ||
mamāpy ete mahārāja bhavadbhir ya udāhṛtāḥ ||
netāras tava senāyāḥ śūrā vikrāntayodhinaḥ ||
sarva ete samarthā hi tava śatrūn pramarditum ||
indrasyāpi bhayaṃ hy ete janayeyur mahāhave ||
kiṃ punar dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ lubdhānāṃ pāpacetasām ||
"He is establisher and ordainer; success is founded upon him. Whomever Krishna-Dasharha names, he is worthy to be our commander. Let the best of speakers declare it: the night is passing." "Then, once we have appointed the commander who follows Krishna's will, when the remainder of the night has passed, we shall go forth to the field of battle, our weapons consecrated and having performed the auspicious rites." Vaishampayana said: Having heard this word of the wise king of dharma, the lotus-eyed one looked at Dhananjaya and said: "O great king, all those you have named as leaders of your army are heroes, valiant warriors. All of them are capable of crushing your enemies. In a great battle they could inspire fear even in Indra himself — what then of the greedy, evil-minded sons of Dhritarashtra?"

The Pandavas choose their military leader not out of pride but through counsel, experience, and trust in Krishna; their advance toward Kurukshetra is then described as orderly, sacrificially prepared, and surrounded by allies. Dharma shows itself here not as a refusal to act but as the right ordering of an inevitable duty.
