वैशंपायन उवाच
तथोक्ते सहदेवेन वाक्ये वाक्यविशारदः ॥
नकुलो ऽनन्तरं तस्माद् इदं वचनम् आददे ॥
वयसा शास्त्रतो धैर्यात् कुलेनाभिजनेन च ॥
ह्रीमान् कुलान्वितः श्रीमान् सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः ॥
वेद चास्त्रं भरद्वाजाद् दुर्धर्षः सत्यसंगरः ॥
यो नित्यं स्पर्धते द्रोणं भीष्मं चैव महाबलम् ॥
श्लाघ्यः पार्थिवसंघस्य प्रमुखे वाहिनीपतिः ॥
पुत्रपौत्रैः परिवृतः शतशाख इव द्रुमः ॥
यस् तताप तपो घोरं सदारः पृथिवीपतिः ॥
रोषाद् द्रोणविनाशाय वीरः समितिशोभनः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tathokte sahadevena vākye vākyaviśāradaḥ ||
nakulo 'nantaraṃ tasmād idaṃ vacanam ādade ||
vayasā śāstrato dhairyāt kulenābhijanena ca ||
hrīmān kulānvitaḥ śrīmān sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ ||
veda cāstraṃ bharadvājād durdharṣaḥ satyasaṃgaraḥ ||
yo nityaṃ spardhate droṇaṃ bhīṣmaṃ caiva mahābalam ||
ślāghyaḥ pārthivasaṃghasya pramukhe vāhinīpatiḥ ||
putrapautraiḥ parivṛtaḥ śataśākha iva drumaḥ ||
yas tatāpa tapo ghoraṃ sadāraḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ||
roṣād droṇavināśāya vīraḥ samitiśobhanaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: When Sahadeva had so spoken, Nakula, skilled in speech, took up the word after him: "By age, knowledge of the shastras, steadfastness, lineage and birth, by modesty, nobility, glory, and knowledge of all the sciences, Drupada is worthy. He learned weaponry from Bharadvaja, is unassailable, true to his word, and constantly rivals Drona and mighty Bhishma. He is praised before the assembly of kings and worthy to stand at the head of the army; he is surrounded by sons and grandsons like a tree with a hundred branches. This hero, lord of the earth, splendid in assembly, together with his wife performed dreadful austerities out of wrath, for the destruction of Drona."

In this chapter the peace negotiations finally give way to the organizing of war. The Pandavas choose their military leader not out of pride but through counsel, experience, and trust in Krishna; their advance toward Kurukshetra is then described as orderly, sacrificially prepared, and surrounded by allies. Dharma shows itself here not as a refusal to act but as the right ordering of an inevitable duty.
