This hero, proud of the strength of his own arms, could not bear it, formerly, when the wise Vasudeva abducted Rukmini. Swearing an oath — 'I shall not return without slaying Keshava' — he pursued the Vrishni scion, the foremost of all bearers of weapons, with a great fourfold army, striking from afar, variously armed and armored, swollen like the river Ganga. Having come upon the Vrishni scion, lord of the powers of yoga, he was defeated and put to shame, O king, and returned to Kundina. There, where Krishna defeated this slayer of enemy heroes in battle, Rukmi founded a magnificent city called Bhojakata.

Rukmi arrives as an ally, but his speech reveals not service to dharma but self-assurance and a wish to display his own strength. Arjuna's answer is not empty pride: he reminds him that his support has already been proven in battle, and it consists not in some chance helper but in Krishna, in divine weapons, in his teachers, and in his own responsibility as a kshatriya. That is why both the Pandavas and Duryodhana are left without Rukmi: the war is purified of ostentatious support that carries no inner loyalty.
