ततः स राक्षसः क्रुद्धः संप्राप्यैवार्जुनिं रणे ॥
नातिदूरे स्थितस् तस्य द्रावयाम् आस वै चमूम् ॥
सा वध्यमाना समरे पाण्डवानां महाचमूः ॥
प्रत्युद्ययौ रणे रक्षो देवसेना यथा बलिम् ॥
विमर्दः सुमहान् आसीत् तस्य सैन्यस्य मारिष ॥
रक्षसा घोररूपेण वध्यमानस्य संयुगे ॥
ततः शरसहस्रैस् तां पाण्डवानां महाचमूम् ॥
व्यद्रावयद् रणे रक्षो दर्शयद् वै पराक्रमम् ॥
सा वध्यमाना च तथा पाण्डवानाम् अनीकिनी ॥
रक्षसा घोररूपेण प्रदुद्राव रणे भयात् ॥
तां प्रमृद्य ततः सेनां पद्मिनीं वारणो यथा ॥
ततो ऽभिदुद्राव रणे द्रौपदेयान् महाबलान् ॥
tataḥ sa rākṣasaḥ kruddhaḥ saṃprāpyaivārjuniṃ raṇe ||
nātidūre sthitas tasya drāvayām āsa vai camūm ||
sā vadhyamānā samare pāṇḍavānāṃ mahācamūḥ ||
pratyudyayau raṇe rakṣo devasenā yathā balim ||
vimardaḥ sumahān āsīt tasya sainyasya māriṣa ||
rakṣasā ghorarūpeṇa vadhyamānasya saṃyuge ||
tataḥ śarasahasrais tāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahācamūm ||
vyadrāvayad raṇe rakṣo darśayad vai parākramam ||
sā vadhyamānā ca tathā pāṇḍavānām anīkinī ||
rakṣasā ghorarūpeṇa pradudrāva raṇe bhayāt ||
tāṃ pramṛdya tataḥ senāṃ padminīṃ vāraṇo yathā ||
tato 'bhidudrāva raṇe draupadeyān mahābalān ||
Then that enraged rakshasa, having reached the son of Arjuna in battle and halted not far from him, began to scatter the army. The great army of the Pandavas, being struck down in battle, advanced to meet the rakshasa, as the army of the gods went forth against Bali. A very great tumult arose in this army, O venerable one, as the rakshasa of terrible form struck it down in battle. Then the rakshasa, displaying his prowess, scattered the great army of the Pandavas in battle with thousands of arrows. Thus struck down, the host of the Pandavas fled the battlefield in fear of the dreadful rakshasa. Having crushed that army, like an elephant a lotus pond, he then charged in battle at the mighty sons of Draupadi.'
