译文

[Bhishma, who was] like a [saving] island for those who, having no crossing, seek firm ground amid the bottomless deep; flooded by a torrent of arrows as by the current of the Yamuna; like the great [mountain] Mainaka, invincible, brought down to the ground; like the sun fallen from the sky and dropped onto the earthly ground — [his fall was] unthinkable, like the once unimaginable conquest of Shatakratu [Indra] by Vritra; the fall of Bhishma in battle plunged the whole army into bewilderment.
