हन्त ते वर्णयिष्यामि सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् ॥
यथा स न्यपतद् द्रोणः सादितः पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः ॥
सेनापतित्वं संप्राप्य भारद्वाजो महारथः ॥
मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य पुत्रं ते वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥

Well then, I, who saw it all with my own eyes, shall tell you everything, how that Drona fell, struck down by the Pandavas and Srinjayas. Having obtained the rank of commander, Bharadvaja [Drona], the mighty chariot-warrior, spoke this word to your son in the midst of the whole army.

Sanjaya declares himself an "eyewitness" -- and by that vouches for the truth of the tale: the testimony of one who saw is the ground of truth. But his story, as before, begins from the end -- "how Drona fell": the narrator again holds the outcome before the listener, so that all that follows is read under the sign of a ruin already accomplished. The verse teaches that truth requires a reliable witness, not rumor; that foreknowledge of the end does not strip the tale of meaning but deepens it; and that under the shadow of the coming outcome, the futility of the schemes about to be told becomes all the more visible.
