प्राप्तः प्रकृतितो धर्मो नाधर्मो मानवान् प्रति ॥
क्रूरः सर्वविनाशाय कालः समतिवर्तते ॥
अन्यथा चिन्तिता ह्य् अर्था नरैस् तात मनस्विभिः ॥
अन्यथैव हि गच्छन्ति दैवाद् इति मतिर् मम ॥
तस्माद् अपरिहार्ये ऽर्थे संप्राप्ते कृच्छ्र उत्तमे ॥
अपारणीये दुश्चिन्त्ये यथाभूतं प्रचक्ष्व मे ॥
prāptaḥ prakṛtito dharmo nādharmo mānavān prati ||
krūraḥ sarvavināśāya kālaḥ samativartate ||
anyathā cintitā hy arthā narais tāta manasvibhiḥ ||
anyathaiva hi gacchanti daivād iti matir mama ||
tasmād aparihārye 'rthe saṃprāpte kṛcchra uttame ||
apāraṇīye duścintye yathābhūtaṃ pracakṣva me ||
By its own nature, dharma [righteousness] has triumphed over mortals, and not adharma; merciless Time, leading to the destruction of all, overcomes everything. For the designs conceived by men, dear one, however wise, turn out quite otherwise — by the will of fate, such is my conviction. Therefore, now that this inevitable circumstance has come upon us — this utmost, unconquerable, unfathomable calamity — tell me all as it truly was.

The chapter is crowned with a confession of the truth the king has reached through sorrow: 'dharma, and not adharma, has triumphed by its own nature.' This is not chance but the law of being — truth prevails because it is woven into the very nature of the world. It is significant that the one who at the outset attributed everything to 'fate' now perceives, behind that 'fate,' the triumph of dharma: fate itself is the fulfillment of the righteous law. And submission before the inevitable — 'tell me how it was' — is acceptance of the higher will. The verse teaches that dharma prevails not from outside but by the nature of things, for the world is built upon truth; that the designs of mortals are futile against the will from above; and that the wisdom born of mature grief lies in humbly accepting what has come to pass as the fulfillment of the righteous law, not as blind fate.
