दुर्वासा नाम विप्रर्षिस् तथा परमकोपनः ॥
आराधितः सदारेण स चास्मै प्रददौ वरान् ॥
तथा गान्धारराजस्य सुतां वीरः स्वयंवरे ॥
निर्जित्य पृथिवीपालान् अवहत् पुष्करेक्षणः ॥
अमृष्यमाणा राजानो यस्य जात्या हया इव ॥
रथे वैवाहिके युक्ताः प्रतोदेन कृतव्रणाः ॥
durvāsā nāma viprarṣis tathā paramakopanaḥ ||
ārādhitaḥ sadāreṇa sa cāsmai pradadau varān ||
tathā gāndhārarājasya sutāṃ vīraḥ svayaṃvare ||
nirjitya pṛthivīpālān avahat puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ ||
amṛṣyamāṇā rājāno yasya jātyā hayā iva ||
rathe vaivāhike yuktāḥ pratodena kṛtavraṇāḥ ||
Durvasas by name, a holy brahman sage, moreover famed for fierce wrath, was placated by Krishna together with his wife [Rukmini], and he granted him boons. Likewise the hero, the lotus-eyed [Krishna], having defeated the other rulers of the earth at the svayamvara, carried off the daughter of the king of Gandhara. The indignant kings were harnessed like thoroughbred horses to his nuptial chariot, lashed by the driving goad.

Krishna, the Lord Himself, still "placates" the wrathful Durvasas and accepts boons from him: the Supreme, in His descent, honors brahmans and sets an example of reverence for the holy, though He Himself is above all gifts. This is His pastime — to play the role of one who is humbled, in order to teach humility. And the kings harnessed to the bridal chariot are an image of how all the pride of rulers submits to the Lord: whoever rose against Him now draws His chariot. The verse teaches that the Lord in His descent shows honor to the holy, thereby instructing people as well; that pride which opposes the Supreme is in the end humbled and made to serve Him; and that even in accepting "boons" from a sage, Krishna remains the Bestower of all boons, playing the role of receiver for the sake of instruction.
