यां तां श्रियम् असूयामः पुरा यातां युधिष्ठिरे ॥
अद्य ताम् अनुजानीमो भीष्मद्रोणवधेन च ॥
तथा च मत्कृते प्राप्तः कुरूणाम् एष संक्षयः ॥
पक्वानां हि वधे सूत वज्रायन्ते तृणान्य् अपि ॥
अनन्यम् इदम् ऐश्वर्यं लोके प्राप्तो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
यस्य कोपान् महेष्वासौ भीष्मद्रोणौ निपातितौ ॥
yāṃ tāṃ śriyam asūyāmaḥ purā yātāṃ yudhiṣṭhire ||
adya tām anujānīmo bhīṣmadroṇavadhena ca ||
tathā ca matkṛte prāptaḥ kurūṇām eṣa saṃkṣayaḥ ||
pakvānāṃ hi vadhe sūta vajrāyante tṛṇāny api ||
ananyam idam aiśvaryaṃ loke prāpto yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
yasya kopān maheṣvāsau bhīṣmadroṇau nipātitau ||
That fortune [Shri] which we once envied, which had passed to Yudhishthira — now we concede it to him, with the slaying of Bhishma and Drona. And thus, by my own fault, has this destruction come upon the Kurus; for indeed, when fruits have ripened for destruction, O charioteer, even blades of grass turn into thunderbolts. Incomparable sovereignty in this world has Yudhishthira obtained, by whose wrath the two great archers, Bhishma and Drona, have been struck down.

Dhritarashtra again confesses his guilt: 'by my own fault has this destruction come.' And he perceives the law of fate: 'when ripened for destruction, even blades of grass become thunderbolts' — the doomed are destroyed by the merest trifle, for fate itself turns against them. It is significant that he ascribes the fall of Bhishma and Drona to 'the wrath of Yudhishthira' — that is, to the power of trampled righteousness, for the righteous man is not wrathful, but his righteousness is unconquerable. The verse teaches that for one ripe for destruction, everything becomes an instrument of his end, even the smallest thing; that wrongdoing, having accumulated its fruit, is undone even by the weakest; and that the 'wrath' of the righteous is not passion but the inexorable force of righteousness, before which even the greatest fall, once they have taken the side of the wrongful.
