Fierce arrows, loosed by [Drona,] deft of hand, mangled chariot-warriors, horsemen, elephants, horses, and footmen. Like a thundering cloud borne by the wind at the close of summer before the rains, he poured down a shower of stones, striking terror into the enemies. He, the mighty one, roamed then, O king, throwing the army into confusion, augmenting a superhuman dread among the foes. His bow, adorned with gold, flitted in that chariot resembling a cloud, like lightning among clouds, appearing to sight again and again.

Drona is likened to a storm-cloud before the rain, pouring down not water but hail: his fearsome grandeur sows not life but death. The image of the "chariot-cloud" with its lightning-bow is beautiful and terrible at once — beauty placed in the service of destruction. It is telling that the fear he instills is called "superhuman": his might exceeds the human measure. The verse teaches that the greatest art, turned to slaughter, displays a fearsome beauty that enchants even as it destroys; that a cloud may pour down blessing or hail — and one and the same gift may nourish or ruin; and that power exceeding the human measure, without a footing in dharma, only multiplies terror rather than good.
