तौ परस्परम् आसाद्य खड्गदन्तनखायुधौ ॥
हृष्टवत् संप्रजह्राते व्याघ्रकेसरिणाव् इव ॥
संपातेष्व् अभिपातेषु निपातेष्व् असिचर्मणोः ॥
न तयोर् अन्तरं कश् चिद् ददर्श नरसिंहयोः ॥
अवक्षेपो ऽसिनिर्ह्रादः शस्त्रान्तरनिदर्शनम् ॥
बाह्यान्तरनिपातश् च निर्विशेषम् अदृश्यत ॥
बाह्यम् आभ्यन्तरं चैव चरन्तौ मार्गम् उत्तमम् ॥
ददृशाते महात्मानौ सपक्षाव् इव पर्वतौ ॥
ततो विक्षिपतः खड्गं सौभद्रस्य यशस्विनः ॥
शरावरणपक्षान्ते प्रजहार जयद्रथः ॥
tau parasparam āsādya khaḍgadantanakhāyudhau ||
hṛṣṭavat saṃprajahrāte vyāghrakesariṇāv iva ||
saṃpāteṣv abhipāteṣu nipāteṣv asicarmaṇoḥ ||
na tayor antaraṃ kaś cid dadarśa narasiṃhayoḥ ||
avakṣepo 'sinirhrādaḥ śastrāntaranidarśanam ||
bāhyāntaranipātaś ca nirviśeṣam adṛśyata ||
bāhyam ābhyantaraṃ caiva carantau mārgam uttamam ||
dadṛśāte mahātmānau sapakṣāv iva parvatau ||
tato vikṣipataḥ khaḍgaṃ saubhadrasya yaśasvinaḥ ||
śarāvaraṇapakṣānte prajahāra jayadrathaḥ ||
The two of them, having closed with each other, [like beasts] whose weapons are fangs and claw-swords, fell to fighting with relish, as a tiger and a maned lion. In the onrushes, thrusts, and downstrokes of sword and shield, no one could make out a vulnerable opening in those two man-lions. The sharp swing, the ring of the blade, the searching out of an opening, blows from outside and inside — all appeared as one blur. Passing through outer and inner techniques, performing the highest [paths], those two great-souled ones seemed like two winged mountains. Then, as the glorious Saubhadra [Abhimanyu] swung his sword, Jayadratha struck him at the rim of his arrow-proof shield.

The duel of two equals is described as an art in which neither leaves a 'vulnerable opening': the highest mastery is a perfect guardedness that gives the opponent no breach. The image of 'two winged mountains' and 'lion and tiger' raises the combat to a majestic spectacle. But this very intensity of equality will not resolve into an equal outcome: it will turn out below that Jayadratha's sword will break — the weapon will fail where skill did not. The verse teaches that true mastery leaves the enemy no loophole; that a duel of equals is a lofty art, not brute force; and that the outcome is sometimes decided not by skill but by chance or by the instrument — a reminder of how much in battle lies beyond human will.
