राक्षसौ भीमकर्माणौ हैडिम्बालम्बुसाव् उभौ ॥
चक्राते ऽत्यद्भुतं युद्धं परस्परवधैषिणौ ॥
मायाशतसृजौ दृप्तौ मायाभिर् इतरेतरम् ॥
अन्तर्हितौ चेरतुस् तौ भृशं विस्मयकारिणौ ॥
चेकितानो ऽनुविन्देन युयुधे त्व् अतिभैरवम् ॥
यथा देवासुरे युद्धे बलशक्रौ महाबलौ ॥
लक्ष्मणः क्षत्रदेवेन विमर्दम् अकरोद् भृशम् ॥
यथा विष्णुः पुरा राजन् हिरण्याक्षेण संयुगे ॥

yathā devāsure yuddhe balaśakrau mahābalau ||
lakṣmaṇaḥ kṣatradevena vimardam akarod bhṛśam ||
yathā viṣṇuḥ purā rājan hiraṇyākṣeṇa saṃyuge ||
Two rakshasas, terrible in deeds — Haidimba [Ghatotkacha] and Alambusa — both waged a most marvelous clash, seeking each other's death. Casting hundreds of delusions, furious, [fighting] one another with delusions, [now] disappearing from sight, the two of them roved in the fight, greatly astonishing [all]. Chekitana fought with Anuvinda most terribly, as in the battle of the gods and demons the mighty Bala and Shakra [Indra]. Lakshmana [son of Duryodhana] waged a ferocious struggle with Kshatradeva, as once, O king, Vishnu with Hiranyaksha in combat.

The duels are likened to the battles of gods and demons — and in these comparisons the language of the narrative arranges the forces: where Indra and Vishnu stand, there is the side of dharma; where Bala and Hiranyaksha stand, there is the side of evil. Thus through human combats shines the eternal struggle of light and darkness, of which the present war is but a new appearance. The battle of the rakshasas by illusions shows that the dark powers too are drawn into the strife, serving one side or the other. The verse teaches that earthly battles are reflections of the eternal struggle of dharma and adharma; that the narrative's comparisons are not accidental but point to where the light stands; and that the great war is an arena on which the forces that have opposed each other from the beginning of creation meet again.
