अथास्त्रम् अरिसंघघ्नं त्वाष्ट्रम् अभ्यस्यद् अर्जुनः ॥
ततो रूपसहस्राणि प्रादुरासन् पृथक् पृथक् ॥
आत्मनः प्रतिरूपैस् तैर् नानारूपैर् विमोहिताः ॥
अन्योन्यम् अर्जुनं मत्वा स्वम् आत्मानं च जघ्निरे ॥
अयम् अर्जुनो ऽयं गोविन्द इमौ यादवपाण्डवौ ॥
इति ब्रुवाणाः संमूढा जघ्नुर् अन्योन्यम् आहवे ॥
athāstram arisaṃghaghnaṃ tvāṣṭram abhyasyad arjunaḥ ||
tato rūpasahasrāṇi prādurāsan pṛthak pṛthak ||
ātmanaḥ pratirūpais tair nānārūpair vimohitāḥ ||
anyonyam arjunaṃ matvā svam ātmānaṃ ca jaghnire ||
ayam arjuno 'yaṃ govinda imau yādavapāṇḍavau ||
iti bruvāṇāḥ saṃmūḍhā jaghnur anyonyam āhave ||
Then Arjuna loosed the astra of Tvashtri, which slays hosts of foes; and at once thousands of forms arose, one apart from another. Bewildered by those manifold doubles of him, taking one another — and even themselves — for Arjuna, they fell to striking. "Here is Arjuna, and here is Govinda, here are these two — the Yadava with the Pandava!" — so crying, maddened, they struck one another in the fight.

The weapon of Tvashtri does not strike by itself — it multiplies Arjuna's form, and the enemies perish by their own hands, striking phantoms and, in them, one another and even themselves. Here a profound parable of delusion reveals itself: a bewildered mind sees a false enemy everywhere and, in blind hostility, destroys itself. It is telling that what destroys the samshaptakas is not so much the arrow as their own confusion, artfully induced. The verse teaches that a man's greatest defeat comes from within — from a deluded mind that mistakes a phantom for an enemy and turns its strength against its own and against itself; and that one who rises up against the Truth incarnate, in that very uprising, loses the power to discern and thereby seals his own doom.
