द्रोणस्य यतमानस्य वशं नैष्यसि सुव्रत ॥
अहम् आवारयिष्यामि द्रोणम् अद्य सहानुगम् ॥
मयि जीवति कौरव्य नोद्वेगं कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
न हि शक्तो रणे द्रोणो विजेतुं मां कथं चन ॥

"However hard Drona may try, you will not fall under his power, O faithful to vows; I will repel Drona this very day, along with his retinue. As long as I live, O Kaurava, you need not harbor anxiety: for in no way is Drona able to overcome me in battle."

Dhrishtadyumna — the one destined to slay Drona — takes upon himself the defense of the king with firm assurance: "as long as I live, do not worry." In his words there is both valor and a foreboding of the role appointed to him. It is significant that he vouches not only with his strength but with his very life: "as long as I live" is the measure by which he gauges fidelity to duty. The verse teaches that true support for one's neighbor is not boasting but readiness to stand between him and disaster at the cost of one's own life; that a warrior firmly aware of his place and duty dispels another's anxiety by his very steadfastness; and that devotion that stakes its life for the one entrusted to it is the highest among martial virtues.
