śaśalohitavarṇās tu pāṇḍurodgatarājayaḥ ||
pāñcālyaṃ gopateḥ putraṃ siṃhasenam udāvahan ||
Dappled, white-footed horses, in trappings of golden mesh, the finest of horses, bore Sahadeva, son of Jarasandha. And those excellent horses, the very hue of a lotus stalk, swift as falcons in their speed, dappled, bore Sudaman. Horses the color of hare's blood, with whitish streaks showing, bore the Panchalian Simhasena, son of Gopati.

Among the warriors is Sahadeva, son of Jarasandha, that mighty king of Magadha who was slain by Bhima; now his son stands for the Pandavas. As with the son of Shishupala before, the same motif recurs: the descendant of a fallen enemy takes his place in the camp of righteousness. His horses are "swift as falcons in speed" — an image of swiftness that surpasses ponderous strength. The verse teaches that the quarrels of fathers need not weigh forever upon their sons; that reconciliation and passing over to the side of dharma are possible even for the offspring of defeated foes; and that by placing them in the same rank as the Pandavas' longtime allies, the tradition affirms: truth is open to anyone who comes to it, regardless of the enmity of past generations.
