rathasenaṃ hayaśreṣṭhāḥ samūhur yuddhadurmadam ||
The son of Samudrasena, a man with the fire of Rudra, was borne by horses of ocean breed, resembling the moon — Chandradeva. Horses the color of the blue lotus, adorned with refined gold, in many-colored garlands, bore Shaibya Chitraratha into battle. And horses the color of pea blossom, with white-and-red streaks, the best of horses, bore Rathasena, furious in battle.

The name Chandradeva — "moon god" — echoes the coloring of his horses, "resembling the moon," of ocean breed; name and appearance converge in harmony. Thus a hidden concord emerges in the review: to each man his horses, his colors, his name seem fitting. It is telling to compare him to "the fire of Rudra": behind the moon's softness of name lies a fearsome power. The verse teaches that outward form and inner nature, name and appearance, often come together into a single image where all things resonate; that in a person the moon's gentleness of name and Rudra's fury in battle can coexist; and that an attentive eye discerns these harmonies and contrasts, seeing in each warrior not a chance assemblage of traits but a whole, uniquely coherent image.
