padmakiñjalkavarṇābhā daṇḍadhāram udāvahan ||
Among the Panchalas, the tiger among men renowned as Janamejaya — his excellent horses were the very color of mustard flowers. Bean-colored, swift, tall, in golden garlands, with whitish backs, moon-faced horses swiftly bore the Panchalian. Valiant and noble horses, the color of a reed stalk, the color of lotus filaments, bore Dandadhara.

The tradition does not tire even at the middle of this long review, finding a new shade for every horse: mustard, bean, curd-white, moon-faced, reed, lotus-filament. In this inexhaustible variety of colors lies a generosity of vision that sees something singular in each. It is telling that the colors are increasingly drawn from flowers and grain, from peaceful nature — as though on the threshold of slaughter, memory keeps safe the images of the blossoming earth. The verse teaches that an attentive eye finds the unrepeatable even where another would see sameness; that the beauty of the world is many-colored and inexhaustible; and that even on the eve of battle it is worth remembering the quiet loveliness of lotus and meadow — for it is for this, for peace and blossoming, that righteous battle is ultimately waged.
