स तु संवर्तयाम् आस द्वैधीभावेन पाण्डवः ॥
रथेन तु रथाग्र्याणाम् अकरोत् तां मृषा तदा ॥

eko rathasahasrāṇi nihantuṃ vāsavī raṇe ||
sā hi duryodhanasyāsīn matiḥ karṇasya cobhayoḥ ||
arjunasya vadhopāye tena dvaidham akalpayat ||
sa tu saṃvartayām āsa dvaidhībhāvena pāṇḍavaḥ ||
rathena tu rathāgryāṇām akarot tāṃ mṛṣā tadā ||
He, the son of Vasava, bearing the banner of the chief of monkeys, turning back at once, [set out] alone to destroy thousands of chariots in battle. For that indeed was the plan of both Duryodhana and Karna, of how to destroy Arjuna: therefore they devised this division [of his forces]. But the Pandava, by that very division, rendered that scheme into nothing, [with a single] chariot against the foremost charioteers then.

The cunning of Duryodhana and Karna lay in 'dividing' Arjuna — forcing him to be torn between two threats; but he turns their very division to his own advantage, throwing his full strength first upon one part. The enemy's scheme, turned against itself, perishes. It is notable that a single warrior on a single chariot brings to nothing a plot calculated to destroy him through sheer numbers. The verse teaches that cunning turned against one strong in spirit often collapses before his own resolve; that dividing an enemy's forces is useless if he himself does not yield to division within; and that firmness of a single will overcomes the treachery of division — one who is not inwardly divided cannot be torn apart by any external calculation.
