By the hundreds, severed hands — still with arrow, bowstring, thumb-guard, and bow — [fell]; banners, horses, charioteers, and chariot-warriors fell to the ground. Alike in form to trees, mountain peaks, and clouds, richly caparisoned, with slain riders, elephants collapsed to the ground, struck by Partha's arrows. With scattered caparisons and reins, with severed harness, lifeless, together with their riders, horses collapsed, torn apart by Partha's arrows.

Severed hands fall, still gripping the bow with an arrow set upon it — an image that captures the very instant of an interrupted act: the warrior had no time to loose the shot before his hand was already parted from him. In this ghastly detail lies the thought of how suddenly the effort of a living being can be cut short. The elephants, meanwhile, crashing down like mountains and clouds, reveal the sheer magnitude of the slaughter. The verse teaches that death in battle overtakes a person in the very midst of an act, without letting it be completed — the hand falls with the arrow unreleased; that all preparations and intentions are futile before the suddenness of the end; and that the epic, by showing this broken gesture, reminds us without words of the fragility of every design that death may cut short before it is ever accomplished.
