अग्रतः सर्वसैन्यानां योत्स्यमानो व्यवस्थितः ॥

Durmarshana with fifteen hundred war elephants stands "agrataḥ sarvasainyānām," ahead of the entire army -- the first bulwark in Arjuna's path. It is telling that a king's own son is placed in the vanguard: a kinsman is sacrificed to buy time for sheltering the guilty. The verse teaches that an unrighteous cause devours its own first: to shield one lawbreaker, a king's own sons are put in harm's way; and a mass of elephants at the point of the spear is not strength but the first wager in a doomed game where those placed in front perish.
