अथास्मै त्वरितो बाणम् अपरं जीवितान्तकम् ॥
आकर्णपूर्णं चिक्षेप वज्रं वज्रधरो यथा ॥
tataḥ śaraśatenāsya śatacandraṃ samākṣipat ||
droṇo drupadaputrasya khaḍgaṃ ca daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
hayāṃś caiva catuḥṣaṣṭyā śarāṇāṃ jaghnivān balī ||
dhvajaṃ chatraṃ ca bhallābhyāṃ tathobhau pārṣṇisārathī ||
athāsmai tvarito bāṇam aparaṃ jīvitāntakam ||
ākarṇapūrṇaṃ cikṣepa vajraṃ vajradharo yathā ||
Then with a hundred arrows Drona struck away the hundred-mooned shield of Drupada's son, and with ten arrows the sword, and with sixty-four arrows he, the mighty one, felled the horses; with two bhalla-arrows he cut down the banner and the parasol, and both flank charioteers as well. Then, drawing his bow to the ear, he swiftly loosed at him another arrow, one that would end his life — like the Thunder-wielder hurling the thunderbolt.

Drona methodically disarms the daring challenger: shield, sword, horses, banner, charioteers — and at last the deadly arrow, jīvitāntakam, vajraṃ vajradharaḥ yathā, like Indra hurling the thunderbolt. Dhrishtadyumna hangs by a thread from death. It is telling that even a flawless daredevil remains vulnerable before the master's skill. The verse teaches that daring guarantees no outcome: courage may enter the lion's den, but fate is not yet decided; death looms over even the bravest — and what saves him now is no longer his own valor but a comrade's help, for destiny has not yet ordained that Drona should fall by this hand.
