तं चतुर्दशभिर् बाणैर् बाणं चिच्छेद सात्यकिः ॥
ग्रस्तम् आचार्यमुख्येन धृष्टद्युम्नम् अमोचयत् ॥
सिंहेनेव मृगं ग्रस्तं नरसिंहेन मारिष ॥
द्रोणेन मोचयाम् आस पाञ्चाल्यं शिनिपुंगवः ॥
सात्यकिं प्रेक्ष्य गोप्तारं पाञ्चाल्यस्य महाहवे ॥
शराणां त्वरितो द्रोणः षड्विंशत्या समर्पयत् ॥
taṃ caturdaśabhir bāṇair bāṇaṃ ciccheda sātyakiḥ ||
grastam ācāryamukhyena dhṛṣṭadyumnam amocayat ||
siṃheneva mṛgaṃ grastaṃ narasiṃhena māriṣa ||
droṇena mocayām āsa pāñcālyaṃ śinipuṃgavaḥ ||
sātyakiṃ prekṣya goptāraṃ pāñcālyasya mahāhave ||
śarāṇāṃ tvarito droṇaḥ ṣaḍviṃśatyā samarpayat ||
That arrow Satyaki cut apart with fourteen arrows of his own, and freed Dhrishtadyumna, who had been seized by the foremost of preceptors. Like a deer seized by a lion, so had the son of Panchala been seized by Drona, the man-lion — and the bull of Shini's line freed him, O worthy one. Seeing Satyaki now the protector of the son of Panchala in that great battle, Drona swiftly pierced him with twenty-six arrows.

Satyaki rescues Dhrishtadyumna — siṃhena iva mṛgam grastam, like a deer torn from a lion's jaws. In the fateful moment, a faithful companion turns death away from his friend. It is telling that one man's feat is saved by another's self-giving. The verse teaches that even the greatest hero stands by the support of the faithful: Dhrishtadyumna's daring is rescued by Satyaki; and in a shared cause no one is self-sufficient — rescue comes through the love and mutual aid of companions, without which even the boldest courage would have fallen.
