The battle sways now one way, now the other: the one who a moment ago was pressing forward is himself pierced in the heart. It is telling that supremacy in war is fleeting -- "pravaraṃ sarvadhanvinām", the best of all archers, is himself wounded in his turn. The verse teaches that in battle there is no secure advantage: fortune passes from hand to hand, and today's victor is struck down tomorrow, for no mortal is granted to hold triumph fast, any more than one can hold flowing water in a cupped palm.
