संजय उवाच
भीमसेनं रणे दृष्ट्वा ज्वलन्तम् इव पावकम् ॥
रथम् अन्यं समास्थाय विधिवत् कल्पितं पुनः ॥
अभ्ययात् पाण्डवं कर्णो वातोद्धूत इवार्णवः ॥
क्रुद्धम् आधिरथिं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रास् तव विशां पते ॥
भीमसेनम् अमन्यन्त वैवस्वतमुखे हुतम् ॥
चापशब्दं महत् कृत्वा तलशब्दं च भैरवम् ॥
अभ्यवर्तत राधेयो भीमसेनरथं प्रति ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
bhīmasenaṃ raṇe dṛṣṭvā jvalantam iva pāvakam ||
ratham anyaṃ samāsthāya vidhivat kalpitaṃ punaḥ ||
abhyayāt pāṇḍavaṃ karṇo vātoddhūta ivārṇavaḥ ||
kruddham ādhirathiṃ dṛṣṭvā putrās tava viśāṃ pate ||
bhīmasenam amanyanta vaivasvatamukhe hutam ||
cāpaśabdaṃ mahat kṛtvā talaśabdaṃ ca bhairavam ||
abhyavartata rādheyo bhīmasenarathaṃ prati ||
Seeing Bhimasena in battle, blazing like fire, Karna mounted another chariot, freshly equipped as is proper. Seeing the enraged son of Adhiratha, your sons, O lord of peoples, deemed Bhimasena already offered up to the mouth of Vaivasvata. Sounding a great twang of the bow and a fearsome slap of the palms, Radheya charged toward Bhimasena's chariot.

The fallen rises on a new chariot — retreat is not death, and victory over a single moment is illusory. It is telling that the onlookers already bury Bhima at the mere sight of Karna's wrath: fear runs ahead of the deed and names the living dead. The verse teaches that human judgment is hasty and mistaken, guessing at an outcome by a fearsome appearance when only the Lord of the hour knows how it will end.
