कर्णस् त्व् एको महाबाहुः स्वबाहुबलम् आश्रितः ॥
भीमसेनम् अनादृत्य रणे ऽयुध्यत सूतजः ॥
te 'pi cāsya mahāghoraṃ balaṃ nāgāyutopamam ||
jānanto vyavasāyaṃ ca krūraṃ mārutatejasaḥ ||
kimarthaṃ krūrakarmāṇaṃ yamakālāntakopamam ||
balasaṃrambhavīryajñāḥ kopayiṣyanti saṃyuge ||
karṇas tv eko mahābāhuḥ svabāhubalam āśritaḥ ||
bhīmasenam anādṛtya raṇe 'yudhyata sūtajaḥ ||
"And they too, knowing his most terrible strength, like ten thousand elephants, and the fierce resolve of the one whose fire is like Vayu's -- why, knowing his might, fury and valor, would they provoke in combat the one fierce in deeds, resembling Yama, Kala and Antaka? Karna alone, mighty-armed, relying on the strength of his own arm, disregarding Bhimasena, fought in the battle, the suta's son."

To provoke one who resembles Yama, Kala and Antaka, knowing his ferocity, is madness -- and the king marvels at it. It is notable that Karna alone does not retreat in timidity: "relying on the strength of his own arm" -- in this steadfastness, however unjust the cause, there is genuine courage. The verse teaches us to distinguish recklessness from valor: it is folly to provoke the unconquerable, but it is worthy to face him relying on one's own arm rather than on another's help.
