न हीदानीं सहाया मे परीप्सन्त्य् अनुपस्कृताः ॥

'For now my allies, unrewarded, do not exert themselves for me; they consider the sons of Pandu more worthy, but not us — not so, O mighty-armed one. For death itself has been decreed for us by Arjuna, true to his vow, in the clash, while you show negligence out of love for your good pupil Dhananjaya. Therefore all who wished for our victory are destroyed; only Karna do I now see seeking our victory.'

Here is a bitter, unjust reproach: Duryodhana accuses Drona of indulging Arjuna "out of love for his pupil." It is telling that in his despair he suspects betrayal even in the teacher who gave everything to his cause. The verse teaches that the despair of the wrongdoer seeks culprits among the faithful; and one who has himself brought disaster upon himself, in his grief insults with suspicion those who served him to the end, unable to admit that the cause lies in himself, not in their negligence.
