ततः सा भारती सेना मणिहेमविभूषिता ॥
द्यौर् इवासीत् सनक्षत्रा रजन्यां भरतर्षभ ॥
गोमायुबडसंघुष्टा शक्तिध्वजसमाकुला ॥
दारुणाभिरुता घोरा क्ष्वेडितोत्क्रुष्टनादिता ॥
ततो ऽभवन् महाशब्दस् तुमुलो लोमहर्षणः ॥
समावृण्वन् दिशः सर्वा महेन्द्राशनिनिस्वनः ॥
tataḥ sā bhāratī senā maṇihemavibhūṣitā ||
dyaur ivāsīt sanakṣatrā rajanyāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
gomāyubaḍasaṃghuṣṭā śaktidhvajasamākulā ||
dāruṇābhirutā ghorā kṣveḍitotkruṣṭanāditā ||
tato 'bhavan mahāśabdas tumulo lomaharṣaṇaḥ ||
samāvṛṇvan diśaḥ sarvā mahendrāśaninisvanaḥ ||
Then that army of the Bharatas, adorned with jewels and gold, was like the starry sky at night, o bull among the Bharatas. Resounding with jackals and birds of prey, thronged with spears and standards, clamorous with dreadful cries, terrible, echoing with shouts and battle-cries -- then arose a great uproar, tumultuous, hair-raising, covering all directions, like the roar of great Indra's thunderbolt.

The army in the dark, gleaming with gold, resembles the starry sky -- but a sky filled with the howling of jackals and cries of terror: beauty and horror fused in a single image. It is significant that the shine of finery on a field of death only sharpens its dread. The verse teaches that even the grim splendor of war does not undo its essence; and the starlike glimmer of armor over a field where jackals howl is no adornment, but a mask -- beneath which lies only blood and doom.
