जघानास्त्रैर् महाबाहुः कुम्भयोनेर् अवित्रसन् ॥
सत्यां चिकीर्षमाणस् तु प्रतिज्ञां कुम्भसंभवः ॥
प्रादुश्चक्रे ऽस्त्रम् ऐन्द्रं वै प्राजापत्यं च भारत ॥
जिघांसुर् धर्मतनयं तव पुत्रहिते रतः ॥
पतिः कुरूणां गजसिंहगामी; विशालवक्षाः पृथुलोहिताक्षः ॥
प्रादुश्चकारास्त्रम् अहीनतेजा; माहेन्द्रम् अन्यत् स जघान ते ऽस्त्रे ॥

译文

Those weapons, cast and being cast, the son of Dharma, mighty-armed, struck down with his own astras, unafraid of the pot-born Drona. Wishing to make his vow come true, the pot-born one displayed the aindra weapon and the prajapatya, O Bharata. The lord of the Kurus, moving like elephant and lion, broad-chested, with large red eyes, of undiminished might, displayed another weapon — the mahendra — and with it struck down your astras.

注释

Drona hurls the aindra, the prajapatya, wishing to fulfill his vow [to capture Yudhishthira]; but the king, unfailing in might, repels them all. Tellingly, the gentle Yudhishthira appears here "moving like elephant and lion," majestic: dharma does not deprive one of royal grandeur. The verse teaches that the righteous, protected by their own rectitude, are not outmatched even in the highest art; and a vow founded on wrong (to capture the king) is not fulfilled, however dreadful the means summoned to it.
