व्यामोहिते तु तनये बाह्लीकः समुपाद्रवत् ॥
विसृजञ् शरवर्षाणि कालवर्षीव तोयदः ॥
भीमो ऽथ सात्वतस्यार्थे बाह्लीकं नवभिः शरैः ॥
पीडयन् वै महात्मानं विव्याध रणमूर्धनि ॥
प्रातिपीयस् तु संक्रुद्धः शक्तिं भीमस्य वक्षसि ॥
निचखान महाबाहुः पुरंदर इवाशनिम् ॥
vyāmohite tu tanaye bāhlīkaḥ samupādravat ||
visṛjañ śaravarṣāṇi kālavarṣīva toyadaḥ ||
bhīmo 'tha sātvatasyārthe bāhlīkaṃ navabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
pīḍayan vai mahātmānaṃ vivyādha raṇamūrdhani ||
prātipīyas tu saṃkruddhaḥ śaktiṃ bhīmasya vakṣasi ||
nicakhāna mahābāhuḥ puraṃdara ivāśanim ||
When his son [Somadatta] had lost his senses, Bahlika charged forward, pouring forth showers of arrows like a cloud pouring down the rain of doom. Bhima then, for Satvata's sake, harried and pierced the great-souled Bahlika at the forefront of battle with nine arrows. Pratipiya [Bahlika], greatly enraged, mighty-armed, drove a lance into Bhima's chest, like Purandara wielding the thunderbolt.

Seeing his son senseless, Bahlika throws himself into the fight: love of kin moves even an old man to battle. Tellingly, his lance is compared to Indra's thunderbolt — his might is real. The verse teaches that care for a loved one drives one into battle regardless of years; and the valor of an elder who rises for a fallen son is no less than youthful fury — love lends strength even to advanced age.
