ननाद सुमहानादं तपान्ते जलदो यथा ॥
स निहत्य बहूञ् शूरान् अश्वत्थामा व्यरोचत ॥
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि भस्म कृत्वेव पावकः ॥
संपूज्यमानो युधि कौरवेयैर्; विजित्य संख्ये ऽरिगणान् सहस्रशः ॥
व्यरोचत द्रोणसुतः प्रतापवान्; यथा सुरेन्द्रो ऽरिगणान् निहत्य ॥

saṃpūjyamāno yudhi kauraveyair; vijitya saṃkhye 'rigaṇān sahasraśaḥ ||
vyarocata droṇasutaḥ pratāpavān; yathā surendro 'rigaṇān nihatya ||
Being slain in battle by the Srinjayas, the Panchalas retreated, abandoning Drauni, their chariots and banners scattered. He, having overcome the enemies in battle, the son of Drona, the maharatha, roared a mighty roar, like a cloud at the close of the heat. He, having struck down many heroes, Ashvatthaman shone like fire that at the end of the yuga has turned all beings to ashes. Honored in battle by the Kauravas, having overcome enemy hosts by the thousand in combat, the valiant son of Drona shone like the king of gods, having struck down the enemy hosts.

The chapter crowns Ashvatthaman with the radiance of Indra after defeating his foes, and of the fire at the end of the yuga: the summit of his night-aristeia. It is telling that he is honored by the Kauravas -- yet this radiance is also an omen of the fire with which he himself will burn the sleeping men in the Sauptika. The verse teaches that valor, reaching a godlike limit, is both formidable and double-edged; and he who now shines like the fire at the end of the world will carry that fire into the night that turns his glory into a curse.
