इत्य् उक्तः परुषं वाक्यं पार्षतेन द्विजोत्तमः ॥
क्रोधम् आहारयत् तीव्रं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥
निर्दहन्न् इव चक्षुर्भ्यां पार्षतं सो ऽभ्यवैक्षत ॥
छादयाम् आस च शरैर् निःश्वसन् पन्नगो यथा ॥
स छाद्यमानः समरे द्रौणिना राजसत्तम ॥
सर्वपाञ्चालसेनाभिः संवृतो रथसत्तमः ॥
नाकम्पत महाबाहुः स्वधैर्यं समुपाश्रितः ॥
सायकांश् चैव विविधान् अश्वत्थाम्नि मुमोच ह ॥
ity uktaḥ paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ pārṣatena dvijottamaḥ ||
krodham āhārayat tīvraṃ tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt ||
nirdahann iva cakṣurbhyāṃ pārṣataṃ so 'bhyavaikṣata ||
chādayām āsa ca śarair niḥśvasan pannago yathā ||
sa chādyamānaḥ samare drauṇinā rājasattama ||
sarvapāñcālasenābhiḥ saṃvṛto rathasattamaḥ ||
nākampata mahābāhuḥ svadhairyaṃ samupāśritaḥ ||
sāyakāṃś caiva vividhān aśvatthāmni mumoca ha ||
When this harsh word was spoken by Parshata, the best of the brahmins boiled with fierce anger and said: 'Stand, stand!' As if scorching with his eyes, he gazed upon Parshata and showered him with arrows, hissing like a serpent. He, being showered in battle by Drauni, O best of kings, surrounded by all the troops of the Panchalas, the best of warriors [Dhrishtadyumna], did not waver, mighty-armed one, but, relying on his own steadiness, loosed various arrows at Ashvatthama.

Both give no ground — Ashvatthama in his anger, Dhrishtadyumna in his steadiness — matched in valor. It is telling that Dhrishtadyumna 'relies on his own steadiness' under a hail of arrows: firmness is his support. The verse teaches that what holds under a storm of blows is not fury but inner steadiness; and one who is surrounded by enemies yet rests upon his own courage will not waver, answering blow with blow.
