अथैनं निशितैर् बाणैश् चतुर्भिर् भरतर्षभ ॥
पार्थो ऽर्दयद् राक्षसेन्द्रं स विद्धः प्राद्रवद् भयात् ॥
तं विजित्यार्जुनस् तूर्णं द्रोणान्तिकम् उपाययौ ॥
किरञ् शरगणान् राजन् नरवारणवाजिषु ॥
वध्यमाना महाराज पाण्डवेन यशस्विना ॥
सैनिका न्यपतन्न् उर्व्यां वातनुन्ना इव द्रुमाः ॥
तेषु तूत्साद्यमानेषु फल्गुनेन महात्मना ॥
संप्राद्रवद् बलं सर्वं पुत्राणां ते विशां पते ॥

pārtho 'rdayad rākṣasendraṃ sa viddhaḥ prādravad bhayāt ||
taṃ vijityārjunas tūrṇaṃ droṇāntikam upāyayau ||
kirañ śaragaṇān rājan naravāraṇavājiṣu ||
vadhyamānā mahārāja pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā ||
sainikā nyapatann urvyāṃ vātanunnā iva drumāḥ ||
teṣu tūtsādyamāneṣu phalgunena mahātmanā ||
saṃprādravad balaṃ sarvaṃ putrāṇāṃ te viśāṃ pate ||
With an arrow he cut in two the raised sword of the unarmed Alambusa. Then with four sharp arrows, O bull of the Bharatas, Partha struck down the lord of the rakshasas; pierced, he fled in fear. Having conquered him, Arjuna swiftly approached Drona, showering swarms of arrows, O king, upon men, elephants and horses. Slain by the glorious Pandava, O great king, the soldiers fell to the ground like trees felled by the wind. And while they were being destroyed by the great-souled Phalguna, [the whole army of your sons fled].

Alambusa, that terror with the horse-faced demons, flees "in fear" -- a fearsome appearance does not save one from defeat. And now Arjuna mows down warriors, "like the wind fells trees," advancing on Drona. It is telling that the rakshasa who spread terror is himself put to flight. The verse teaches that fear, which evil sows around itself, turns back upon its sower the moment it meets the firm strength of truth; and the one dreadful only in appearance retreats first, for behind the terrifying mask there was no true steadfastness.
